Teeth scaling and polishing

Teeth scaling and polishing are common dental procedures that help maintain oral health and hygiene by removing plaque, tartar, and stains from the teeth. These procedures are often performed during routine dental cleanings and play a crucial role in preventing gum disease, cavities, and other oral health issues. Below is an overview of scaling and polishing, their benefits, process, and considerations.

Benefits of Teeth Scaling and Polishing
  • Prevention of Gum Disease

  • Cavity Prevention

  • Improved Aesthetic Appearance

  • Bad Breath (Halitosis) Control

  • Prevention of Plaque and Tartar Buildup

  • Early Detection of Dental Problems

Root planing

Root planing, also known as Root smoothing, is a deep cleaning procedure used to treat gum disease and promote the healing of the gums and the supporting structures of the teeth. It is typically performed in conjunction with scaling and is a more intensive treatment for gum disease than routine dental cleanings. Root planing aims to remove tartar  and plaque buildup below the gumline and smooth the tooth roots, which helps reduce gum inflammation and promotes the reattachment of the gums to the teeth.

Gum recession treatment

Gum recession is a common dental condition, but it can often be treated effectively with the right intervention. The treatment approach depends on the severity of the recession and the underlying cause. Non-surgical options like improved oral hygiene and scaling/root planing can be effective for early-stage gum recession, while more advanced cases may require surgical procedures like gum grafting, pinhole surgery, or laser treatments. If you’re experiencing gum recession, it’s important to consult with a dentist or periodontist who can assess the condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment plan. Taking action early can help prevent further damage and improve the health and appearance of your gums

Preventing Gum Recession
  • Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid brushing too hard.
  • Floss daily to remove plaque between your teeth and at the gumline.
  • Regular dental checkups: Visit your dentist at least twice a year for routine cleanings and checkups.
  • Treat gum disease early: If you notice signs of gum disease, such as red, swollen, or bleeding gums, seek treatment promptly to prevent further damage.
  • Avoid tobacco products, which can weaken the gums and make them more susceptible to recession.

Flap surgeries

Flap surgery is a highly effective treatment for advanced gum disease that helps to reduce pocket depths, remove infected tissue, and restore gum health. It is typically recommended for patients with severe gum disease who have not responded to non-surgical treatments.
While flap surgery is a major procedure, it can prevent further gum and bone damage, preserve tooth structure, and improve both the appearance and function of the gums. If you’re experiencing advanced gum disease or have concerns about your gum health, it’s important to consult with a periodontist who can evaluate your condition and recommend the best treatment options for you.

Risks and Considerations

Like any surgery, flap surgery carries some risks. These include:

  • Infection:

  • Tooth Sensitivity:

  • Recession of Gums:

  • Bleeding and Swelling:

  • Changes in Bite:
